Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : 12 Are Indicted in Tourist Robberies

February 29, 1996|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Federal prosecutors obtained the indictment of a dozen members of a crime ring they say targeted foreign tourists as they arrived at Miami International Airport and then robbed them as they struggled to find their hotels. According to prosecutors, the ring members loitered around the airport, scanning the video displays for incoming flights and then watching passengers unload baggage. While the federal indictment only mentions 18 robberies occurring between September 1991 and December 1995, the prosecutors said they have evidence that the men committed more than 200 robberies.
