How obscurely refreshing it was to read the Judith Sims article on canning ("Shelf Life," Style, Jan. 28). I, too, am a canner, who had to remember how it was done back home in Rhode Island when I was a youngster. The horde of fruit trees in my backyard quivers with anticipation when I pull out the long-handled picker and start boiling lids.
