Concrete-Floor Cleaning Advice

April 14, 1996

I am appalled at your response to a question about cleaning oil and grease from concrete floors ("Handyman Q&A," March 17).

In view of the known carcinogenic properties of benzene, it is irresponsible to recommend use of a poultice made with benzene.

In addition, many of these stains probably are on garage floors. If the garage happens to contain a gas-fired water heater and ventilation is inadequate (garage door closed, maybe) both benzene and naphtha could rapidly create an explosive atmosphere.
