World IN BRIEF : NORTHERN IRELAND : Sinn Fein Leader to Run in Election

May 01, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

Sinn Fein, the political wing of the militant IRA, said its president, Gerry Adams, will run in Northern Ireland elections called by Britain as a prelude to June peace talks. The party ended speculation last week by announcing that it will contest the May 30 election despite charging that the vote was a British device to entrench Northern Ireland's majority unionists, opposed to Sinn Fein's goal of a united Ireland. However, Sinn Fein will be barred from the June negotiations unless the Irish Republican Army calls a truce in its guerrilla campaign against British rule of Northern Ireland.
