The Southern Section council voted in new playoff groupings for football at a meeting last Thursday. The playoffs will expand from 11 to 12 divisions for 11-man football. The increase will result in three divisions having four leagues instead of the traditional five. "We were adding three new leagues, so expansion made sense," said Bill Clark, the section's football administrator. . . . Oxnard Rio Mesa unseated Santa Barbara as the Griggs Cup champion at the Ojai tennis tournament last weekend. Top-ranked Santa Barbara had won the prestigious award seven years in a row. . . . Mark Hill, fired as the boys' basketball coach at Anaheim Esperanza on April 15, has filed a grievance with the Placentia-Yorba Linda School District, claiming his dismissal violated the collective bargaining agreement. In eight seasons, Hill's teams were 139-78 and won three league titles. . . . Dylan Pope, the Riverside County boys' basketball player of the year, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy. Pope, a 6-4 guard, averaged 22 points last season. . . . Sophomore Yon Yim of Irvine Woodbridge won the inaugural Southern Section girls' golf tournament by shooting a 68 at the Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs Monday. . . . A note in an earlier column incorrectly reported that the Cerritos Valley Christian girls' basketball team had won six Southern Section titles in the last seven years. The Crusaders have won five in a row.
