Leaving Las Vegas: This much-praised recent release stars Oscar winner Nicolas Cage as an unrepentant drunk who finds love (and as much booze as he wants) in Las Vegas. Directed by Mike Figgis. R.

Desert Hearts: This 1985 movie directed by Donna Deitch is set in Reno in 1959 and focuses on the relationship between a young lesbian and a university professor on the verge of a divorce. The film is presented in cooperation with the UC Irvine Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Resource Center. R.

Pony Soldier: Tyrone Power stars in this 1952 release about Canadian Mounties trying to stop an Indian war. The movie was directed by Joseph M. Newman and also features Robert Horton. NR.

Blue Velvet: Cult favorite David Lynch looks at the creepiness behind the pleasant facade of small-town America in his 1986 film centering on weird violence and even weirder sexuality in the suburbs. This precursor to Lynch's TV series, "Twin Peaks," stars Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan and Dennis Hopper. R.
