With a 16-1 record, you wouldn't expect Santa Ynez Coach Chip Fenenga to be frustrated, but he is. His team is top-seeded in Division III and will play Salesian on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section playoffs, but he says they haven't had the killer instinct to finish off lesser opponents this season. "We play well enough to win depending on who we play, and as a coach, that's kind of frustrating," Fenenga said. While his team has allowed its less-skilled opponents in the playoffs to score in double figures, Santa Ynez has swept both opponents, L.A. Baptist and Villanova Prep. "We won [Tuesday], but it almost felt like we lost because we have more guys who hate to lose more than they like to win--there's a distinction there. They're quiet guys. They're smart, otherwise they wouldn't be going to places like Stanford and Occidental." If expectations are a tall order, so are the guys at the net. Santa Ynez is led by 6-foot-7 senior Andy Witt, his brother Larry (6-5, sophomore), junior middle blocker Michael Wall and 6-7 senior Ed Pankau. . . . Although there were few upsets in the first two rounds of the playoffs, there were outstanding performances. Westlake was within one point of sweeping Glendale when Glendale staged a frenetic rally to force a fifth game. Westlake finally prevailed, 16-14, 15-5, 22-24, 12-15, 15-2. Jason Lee had 29 kills for Westlake (11-4).
