Nation IN BRIEF : MONTANA : 'Freemen' Hold Talks With FBI Agents

May 17, 1996|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Two unidentified FBI agents, accompanied by Colorado state Sen. Charles Duke, held the agency's first face-to-face talks with four of the "freemen" at the ranch where the anti-government group has been holed up for seven weeks. The agents and Duke drove up to a cattle gate on the edge of the ranch near Jordan and were joined minutes later by the freemen, reporters at the scene said. The talks lasted about one hour and 45 minutes. There was no immediate word if any progress was made.
