Movies to Tape

May 19, 1996|Kevin Thomas

California Split (TMC Thursday at 10:45 a.m.) The cracked, funny, desperate odyssey, from Los Angeles to Vegas, of two compulsive gamblers (George Segal, Elliot Gould) who live in a world bounded by midnight and dawn, the shuffle of cards and the clack of a roulette wheel. Robert Altman takes a less paranoid view of gambling than usual; the characters are no less driven and self-destructive, but the story is sweeter, funnier, looser and more amiable.
