Veronica Lopez

Canyon, Junior

Canyon Coach Lance Eddy didn't pitch Lopez in every game early in the season, so she would be fresh for league and the playoffs, and the strategy is working very well. In the first round of the Division I playoffs, Lopez pitched an 18-inning shutout to beat El Dorado, 1-0. Last week, she pitched a two-hitter and gave up only an unearned run in a 7-1 victory over Trabuco Hills and a six-hitter in a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Newbury Park. She didn't have her best stuff against Newbury Park, but toughened with runners on base. Four of her eight strikeouts came with runners in scoring position. She has given up one earned run in 72 innings.

Geney Orris

* Brea Olinda, senior. Pitched a two-hitter in the Wildcats' 4-0 victory over Whittier California. She has given up only one earned run in 16 innings in the Division III playoffs.

Marissa Young

* Mater Dei, freshman. Pitched a perfect game in the Monarchs' 1-0 victory over Thousand Oaks in the Division I playoffs. Young hasn't given up a hit in 21 innings.

Track and Field

Carrie Axton

* Los Amigos, junior. Won the discus at the Southern Section Masters meet with a mark of 150 feet, the best by an Orange County girl this season.

Kelly O'Connor

* Esperanza, senior. Won the triple jump at the Masters meet with wind-aided mark of 39-11 and finished second in the long jump (19-2 1/4).
