More on Roscoe's

May 30, 1996

Since Roscoe's House of Chicken 'n Waffles (Counter Intelligence, May 9) is a sit-down family restaurant, it thinks of its customers not so much as customers but more as family members.

And those family members come from all walks of life. In addition to funkateers, hip-hop gangstas and old-time crooners, they include such notables as U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, the Rev. Cecil Murray, the tourist who just got off the plane from Japan, the high school student from Arizona as well as Sharon Stone, Quincy Jones, Bruce Willis and a host of others. I can't tell you which location, because they may stop in at any location.

It was a big compliment for Roscoe's to receive a request from the Sony Corp. to cater the Billboard Music Awards for 6,000 people this past November. I know what you're thinking. And yes, you're right; that is a big family to feed.

There's a lot of pride in seeing a person's eyes light up when they find out that the meaty wings on a No. 9 and the succulent breast on a No. 13 at Roscoe's were pan-fried. And to see the disappointment on people's faces when they hear that Roscoe's blend of pure cane and maple syrup cannot be bought on the open market because it's made exclusively for Roscoe's "family members" only. But a big smile reappears on their faces when they find out that there's nothing artificial in the syrup.

And you probably didn't know that Roscoe's pan-fries its chicken, just like Grandma used to do. In addition to that, they use only fresh vegetables. Now, that's extremely important for those side orders of mixed greens, corn on the cob, red beans and rice, homemade potato salad. Hey! Even the orange juice has no additives; it's just pure, natural orange juice from freshly squeezed oranges.

So with open arms and warm smiles, Roscoe's welcomes the many readers of the L.A. Times to join its family.
