Police to Use Bikes to Get the Bad Guys

May 30, 1996|BILL BILLITER

Bicycle riding police officers will be used this summer in a special program, Police Chief Daryl Wicker has announced.

"The department plans to implement active bicycle patrols this summer," Wicker told the City Council on Tuesday. At his request, the council unanimously authorized the purchase of four "patrol-equipped bicycles."

The low bid for the four mountain bikes, submitted by ABC Bicycle Co. of Cypress, totaled $5,461.30, Wicker said. The bikes include special lights, racks, packs and sirens.

Wicker said the bikes will provide "a quiet and expedient method of patrol in community centers, such as shopping centers." He said the quiet nature of bicycles allow officers to catch criminals before they know they're being approached.

Four police officers assigned to the new Cypress Community Action Team will use the bikes, Wicker said, and they will work in residential neighborhoods as well as business areas. "This patrol team, unlike traditional patrol officers, will not have specific beat assignments or receive radio calls for service," he added.
