NORTH KOREA : Red Cross Warns of Impending Famine

May 30, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

Tens of thousands of North Koreans are subsisting on rice and greens, but even those meager rations will be cut unless more foreign aid can be raised, the head of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said. "We need a major injection of cash and food aid to avert a famine," George B. Weber said after ending a four-day visit to North Korea. The organization has been feeding 130,000 rural North Koreans since floods destroyed much of the country's farmland last summer.
