Division I Baseball Final Set

May 30, 1996|MIKE TERRY | TIMES STAFF WRITER

The Southern Section Division I championship baseball game between Fountain Valley and La Puente Bishop Amat has been moved from Friday to Saturday, section officials said.

The game will begin at 4:30 p.m at Blair Field in Long Beach. The Division II championship game between Canyon and Upland will follow at 7:30.

Bishop Amat officials wanted to change the date because the school's graduation ceremony is Friday.

After determining that changing the date was not a problem with Fountain Valley, section officials then cleared the move with Canyon and Upland.

According to Commissioner Dean Crowley, the Division I game wasn't alone. All six title games this weekend required some juggling.

"The problem was we didn't find out most of the problems until the semis," Crowley said. "Pasadena La Salle also had a graduation conflict. La Mirada had a prom. We're trying to accommodate because we felt the graduations were necessary.

"Fortunately everyone involved in switches bent over backwards to cooperate."

Steve Anderson, Canyon boys' athletic director, said the addition of the Division I game Saturday would not take away any luster from his school's appearance in the Division II final.

"This doesn't take from either game and could give us bigger crowds," Anderson said. "The people that want to see good baseball would see both games, and the school's followers would come anyway.

"You're in a championship game and you've got to be excited to be there."

Bob Canary has been rehired as Dana Hills baseball coach. He replaces Donn Munsell, who resigned after a year to spend more time with his family.

"I wanted the job but the timing was not good," said Munsell, whose team went 4-19 overall this season. "I had a hard time dealing with not watching my kids grow.

Canary had been Dana Hills coach for 15 season before resigning last June. He was 167-173-6 at the Dana Point school.
