Golf Operators Vie With Plans for Los Robles

June 11, 1996|MIGUEL BUSTILLO

In a daylong study session, the Thousand Oaks City Council listened to proposals Monday from five companies interested in operating the Los Robles Greens municipal golf course.

Council members plan to look at golf courses run by the companies before making a decision on whom to award a five-year contract. The council is expected to choose an operator by the end of the summer. The candidates are Westlake Golf & Tennis, American Golf, M.F. Daily, Environmental Golf, and Arnold Palmer Golf. The current operator, Angelo Ruggiero Inc., is part of the M.F. Daily proposal. That contract will run out in the next few months.

City Manager Grant Brimhall urged the City Council to act carefully in finding the best steward for the 18-hole golf course, stressing its importance to the community.

More than 800,000 rounds of golf have been played at Los Robles Greens during the past eight years--making it one of the most popular courses in Southern California. However, heavy use has left the 32-year-old, 111-acre course in disrepair, according to city officials.

In addition to considering different operators, Thousand Oaks plans to redesign and modernize Los Robles Greens.
