South El Monte to Hold Meeting on Bond Issue

June 11, 1996

The South El Monte City Council will hold a public hearing tonight to consider approving an $8-million bond issue to pay for street improvements, a beautification project and housing construction.

The council is expected to vote on City Manager Rita Hardin's proposal to issue a kind of bond that it can approve rather than putting the issue before the voters. It would pay for an overhaul of sewers, fire hydrants, traffic signals and other projects.

Critics say the working-class community simply cannot afford the payments on the bond debt, and the people should vote on such issues.
