June 21, 1996

Despite poor surfing conditions, Huntington Beach's Barry Deffenbaugh was able to pull off some high-scoring waves Thursday and advance to the second round of the main event on the second day of the Bud Surf Tour Body Glove competition at the Oceanside Pier.

Andy Irons of Kauai, Hawaii, recorded the day's highest score with a 20.17, followed by Ben Bourgeios of North Carolina, who scored a 19.67.

In bodyboarding competition, Jason Voelkl of Tustin scored one of the best rides of the day, which helped him advance to the main event.

Round 2 of the main event begins at 7 a.m. today, followed by the bodyboard main event. Longboard trials begin in the afternoon.
