Old New Mexico

June 23, 1996

I don't want to sound ungrateful, but to ignore my beautiful town of Santa Fe on your map of New Mexico and in your delightful article ("Unscrubbed New Mexico" by Christopher Reynolds, June 2) is quite an insult to the residents of our "City Different." After all, you can't even get to most of the destinations mentioned in your article without driving past or through Santa Fe. Why would someone want to visit New Mexico without at least a perfunctory stop at perhaps the most historically interesting city in the Southwest?

I very much enjoyed Christopher Reynolds' article, but I was a bit disappointed that he did not elaborate on the beautiful, charming town of Las Vegas, N.M. One can see many types of architecture--from saloons popular in the gunslinging era to turn-of-the-century Victorian houses, many since renovated into quaint bed and breakfasts.
