But Not Bigger Than Jesus

June 30, 1996|Dave Jennings, from London

Oasis is more popular than the Beatles. That's the result of a recent survey of British pop fans by Music Week magazine, the U.K. equivalent of Billboard. In a poll in which people aged 15 to 45 in seven cities were asked to name their favorite pop group, Oasis received nearly twice as many votes as the Fab Four.

The result drew stern condemnation from one authoritative source: Oasis itself. The band's office issued a statement responding to the poll, commenting, "The survey puts Oasis up there as a classic band alongside the greats like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley. Are [Oasis] bigger than the Beatles? That's blasphemy!"
