Q: What are the highest and lowest temperatures on record?

A: The highest air temperature ever recorded (in the shade) was 136 degrees Fahrenheit in el-Azizia, Libya, in 1922, according to the New York Public Library Science Desk Reference. The highest temperature in Death Valley was only 134 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded in 1913. The lowest temperature recorded was -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit at Vostok Station in Antarctica in 1983.
