NATIONWIDE : 50% Jump in Beach Closings Reported

A combination of storm runoff and sewage overflows forced the closing of 3,522 ocean and lake beaches last year, a 50% increase over 1994, a Washington-based environmental group reported. In California, the number of pollution-related beach closings reached 1,305 last year, up from 910 the previous year, according to the annual tally by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Los Angeles County beaches were closed for at least 23 days last year, the council reported.
