New Home Project Sales Increase by Nearly 28%

July 14, 1996

The top 50 best-selling new home projects in Southern California sold a total of 1,570 homes during the first quarter of 1996, a 27.6% increase over a year ago, according to the Meyers Group, an Irvine real estate information company.

"The market leader of the six-county region is Orange County, which had 12 best-selling projects," said Jeffrey S. Meyers, president of the Meyers Group. "Sales are up 33% year to date, and only 3.5% behind 1989 levels."

And it is not just the lower-priced entry-level homes that are selling, he said. "The move-up market has begun to sell as well, in response to improvement in the resale market," Meyers said.

For example, he said, Standard Pacific, based in Costa Mesa, opened a project called Harbor Cover in Newport Beach and sold 20 in one day. Average price: $500,000. In Coto de Caza, he said, Polygon Homes sold 14 homes on the day it opened its Glen Eagles project.
