July 19, 1996

Sonia Denoncourt of Canada will become the first female soccer referee in the Olympics when she officiates Sunday's game between Japan and Germany at Birmingham, Ala.

The committee also ended the suspension of Dutch referee Dick Jol and cleared him of allegations he bet on matches.
