July 21, 1996|NICK GREEN

A funeral Mass for slain Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy Peter John Aguirre Jr. will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ventura, 10800 Henderson Road.

The 800-seat church is expected to be filled as relatives, friends and officers from around the state pay their respects to the 26-year-old Santa Paula native who was shot Wednesday in Meiners Oaks while responding to a domestic dispute. A sound system will enable those outside the church to hear the service, a county sheriff's spokesman said.

The service is expected to end between 11:45 a.m. and noon when Aguirre's coffin will be taken to Santa Paula Cemetery.

The length of Henderson Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the service and funeral procession. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Santa Paula Street in Santa Paula will also be closed between Cameron and Bradley streets near Santa Paula Cemetery.

The procession will move from Henderson Road to Wells Road, west on California 126 to Briggs Road and then east along Santa Paula Street to the cemetery.

The procession is expected to take up to an hour. As of Saturday, police agencies in Los Angeles, Torrance, Newport Beach, Mayfield, Barstow, Sonoma County, San Diego County as well as Ventura County police and fire departments have confirmed they would send representatives to the funeral.
