Injured Rubin Out; Mary Joe Fernandez In

July 21, 1996|BILL DWYRE

Chanda Rubin, suffering from a stress fracture in a wrist that has kept her off the WTA tour for more than a month, will not be able to realize her dream of playing in the Olympics.

Rubin, seeded seventh, withdrew Saturday because of the injury and will be replaced by Mary Joe Fernandez, a bronze medalist in singles at the Barcelona Games. Fernandez, who won a gold medal with Gigi Fernandez in 1992, also will play doubles, again with Gigi Fernandez.
