The U.S. women fell behind early against the Netherlands, then came back for an emotional 12-15, 15-10, 17-15, 15-7 victory.

WATER POLO

Paced by Chris Humbert's three goals, the United States defeated Ukraine to virtually assure itself of a spot in the quarterfinals.

FIELD HOCKEY

In 115-degree heat, the U.S. women took a giant step toward the medal round with a surprising 3-2 victory over South Korea.

GYMNASTICS

John Macready, formerly of Santa Monica, tried to do the nearly impossible to get the U.S. a bronze medal. He couldn't do it.
