Forum to Discuss 'Insurance Crisis'

July 24, 1996|DARRELL SATZMAN

The San Fernando Valley Assn. of Realtors will hold a public forum tonight to discuss what that organization calls a "critical shortage" of homeowner and earthquake insurance available to Valley residents.

The forum, co-sponsored by state Sens. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley), Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) and Herschel Rosenthal (D-Van Nuys), who also serves as chairman of the State Insurance Committee, will focus on solutions to an "insurance crisis" that "threatens homeowners, prospective buyers and could undermine California's fragile economy," said Millie Jones, public affairs director for the association.

"We've got a tremendous problem and we want to discuss some of the possible solutions," Jones said. "Some of our homeowners who have had insurance for years have suddenly been canceled. They want to know what they can do about it."

The panel discussion, moderated by San Fernando Valley Assn. President John Maquar, will include Wright and representatives from the California Assn. of Realtors, the state Senate Insurance Committee, the state Department of Insurance and other insurance industry and elected officials. A brief public commentary period has also been scheduled, Jones said.

The forum will be held from 7 to 9 tonight in the San Fernando Valley Assn. of Realtors' auditorium, 7232 Balboa Blvd. in Van Nuys.
