Timer Is on Your Side

July 25, 1996|PHIL ANDRES

If overcooked fettuccine is the stuff of your nightmares, the "Pasta Per'fect Timer" might help. The new heat-sensitive gadget from Burton Plastics accompanies your pasta into the boiling, salted water to ensure that every single strand comes out perfectly al dente.

The first time you use the device, you are told to cook the pasta to your preferred doneness and note the corresponding color of the timer. When we cooked our spaghetti, the reading was well past the lasagna level. So there's a good amount of leeway on the "Per'fect" scale.

The timer is easy to use once you get the hang of it. Anyway, isn't it time you moved on to larger concerns, like why they put an apostrophe in "Pasta Per'fect"?
