MEN'S SOCCER

The U.S. team was held to a 1-1 tie by Portugal, maintaining the dubious tradition of getting eliminated during the first round.

WATER POLO

The U.S. team beat Croatia, 10-8, to finish second in its preliminary group and will play Spain on Friday for a place in the semifinals.

MEN'S GYMNASTICS

Americans John Roethlisberger finished seventh, Blaine Wilson was 10th and John Macready was 29th, but Chinese champion wins.

FIELD HOCKEY

Progress is measured in very small steps for the U.S. team, which lost to India, 4-0, and fell to 0-26-3 in the Games since 1932.
