Two Locals Fighting for Mexico Eliminated

July 25, 1996|From Times Wire Services

Two fighters who live in the Los Angeles area but are fighting for Mexico took quick, decisive exits--interestingly, both at the hands of Kazakhstani fighters.

In the most lopsidedly scored contest of the tournament so far, Oxnard-based light-welterweight Carlos Martinez, took two standing-eight counts in a 25-2 loss to Bolat Niyazymbetov.

Light-heavyweight Julio Gonzalez, who lives in Huntington Beach, was stopped in the second round by Vassili Jirov.
