Van Heiland of U.S. Loses First Match

Jeng Shwu-zen of Taiwan defeated American Erika Van Heiland, 11-6, 11-2, in 20 minutes in women's singles competition.

In men's action, Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen of Denmark opened with an easy 15-2, 15-2 victory over Kayode Akinsanya of Nigeria.

Stuer-Lauridsen was the only non-Asian to gain a medal at the Barcelona Games in 1992 with a bronze.
