July 26, 1996|Times Wire Services

Top-seeded Andre Agassi beat Karol Kucera of Slovakia, 6-4, 6-4, and he may be coming out of the bullpen to try and help save the U.S. doubles entry.

Richey Reneberg, who was scheduled to team with MaliVai Washington, aggravated a groin strain during first-round action Wednesday. He also was hospitalized for heat exhaustion. Team officials will make a decision about Agassi this morning.

"The team took a hit and you have to adjust," said Agassi, whose last doubles experience resulted in a first-round loss about a year ago. "If that calls for you to do more, you do more."

Third-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden defeated Armenia's Sargis Sargsian, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Defending champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland beat Denmark's Frederik Fetterlein, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

In women's play, third-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain beat Italy's Silvia Farina, 6-1, 6-2. No. 13 Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina swept Angelica Gavaldon of Mexico, 6-4, 6-0.

Switzerland's Martina Hingis lost to Japan's Ai Sugiyama, 6-4, 6-4.
