Three days into the women's beach volleyball tournament, Gail Castro of Glendale and partner Deb Richardson became the first Americans eliminated.

Castro, a standout at La Crescenta High and Valley College, and Richardson lost Thursday, 15-11 to Japan's Sachiko Fujita and Yukiko Takahasi.

They were one of three American tandems in the competition. Only one team is still in the hunt for a medal.
