Dutch in A Position in Group B Standings

July 28, 1996

The Netherlands clinched a berth in the medal round with a 3-1 victory over winless South Korea in men's field hockey. The Dutch (3-0-1) are undefeated atop Group B.

In other Group B matches, Australia (2-1-1) routed Malaysia, 5-1, behind Baeden Choppy's three goals and Britain beat South Africa, 2-0.

In women's competition, South Korea and the Netherlands solidified their chances of reaching the medal round with convincing victories.

South Korea defeated winless Spain, 2-0, on goals by Chang Eun-jung and Lee Eun-young, and the Netherlands seriously damaged Argentina's medal hopes with a 4-1 victory. Wietske de Ruiter scored three goals for the Dutch.

The United States, in a three-way tie for fifth in the eight-team field, needs to finish fourth to have a chance for its first Olympic medal since 1984.

The U.S. and Britain are 1-2-2 and Argentina is 2-3 under the system in which a victory is worth two points and a tie one. Germany is fourth at 2-2-1 and five points.
