July 29, 1996|JASON TERADA

A 21-year-old Oxnard man was in critical condition Sunday after being stabbed the night before during a dance in Ventura.

The victim, Sergio Becerra, was attending the dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 36 S. Figueroa St., about 11:20 p.m. when the group he was with was confronted by members of a rival Oxnard tagging crew, police said. According to authorities, the youths involved in the incident are known taggers, suspected of spraying graffiti on buildings throughout Ventura County.

A fight broke out and Becerra was stabbed in the chest, the knife puncturing his heart, investigators said. He was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Becerra was listed in critical but stable condition Sunday morning. A 17-year-old El Rio youth was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and taken to Juvenile Hall in Ventura.
