Going Hollywood

A look at the day that was and at what lies ahead at the Summer Games

August 01, 1996|DOUG CRESS

The news that former teen hunk Mario Lopez has been cast to portray diver Greg Louganis in the upcoming USA Network film, "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story" underscores what an open season it is for Olympic bio-pics. U.S. sprinter Gail Devers' battle to overcome Graves' disease was the subject of a made-for-television film that aired shortly before the Olympics, while two movies are planned concerning the life and premature death of U.S. distance runner Steve Prefontaine, who competed at the 1972 Games. "Pre," a cable film, began production last month in the Pacific Northwest, while "The Steve Prefontaine Story" is a feature film slated for a fall shoot.

But while most sports movies look a little phony, Louganis is expected to do all the diving scenes for his bio-pic.
