Conference on Elvis Opens at Ole Miss

August 04, 1996

The University of Mississippi in Oxford is host for "Elvis and the Sacred South," a week of both scholarly and pop-culture looks at the Presley myth. Running today through Friday, the Second International Conference on Elvis Presley features rockabilly and gospel performances, road trips, an art exhibit and a documentary film. Experts from five countries will speak on how the King's music relates to Southern culture, and there will even be a performance of Elvis numbers sung in Latin.

Included are performances, a classic car rally, a riverboat cruise, a 5K run and, the night of Aug. 15, a candlelight vigil at Graceland.
