GOP Train Ride

A bevy of GOP convention-bound Republican lawmakers and party regulars will be riding the "Victory Express Train" from Oakland to San Diego today, stopping at the Glendale Amtrak station along the way (B2). . . . Among those joining House Speaker Newt Gingrich and company will be Glendale Assemblyman James Rogan.

Democratic Meeting

San Fernando Valley-area Democrats, meanwhile, are planning their own campaign shindig for Aug. 18 in Burbank. . . . The Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley will hold "Victory '96" at the Machinists Union Hall. The event is expected to bring together a variety of local Democrats, from aspiring lawmakers to incumbents such as Assemblyman Richard Katz and Rep. Howard L. Berman.

Still Pitching

Pitchers Fili Martinez and Javier De La Hoya each had dreams of playing Major League Baseball, but injuries almost ended their careers (C10). . . . Now, after humbling but productive stints in the Mexican leagues, Martinez, 29, of Glendale and De La Hoya, 26, of North Hollywood, are back in the minor leagues for what is perhaps their last shot at the big leagues.
