Critic's Pick

August 11, 1996|Kevin Thomas

Actor William Wellman Jr. joined forces with writer-director Todd Robinson to make this warm, loving tribute to his late father. Wellman Sr. made the very first Oscar-winning movie, "Wings" (1927), got James Cagney (pictured) to shove that grapefruit in Mae Clark's face in "Public Enemy" (1931), and directed the first "A Star Is Born" (1937) (TNT Tuesday at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.; Wednesday at 10 p.m.; Saturday at 10 a.m.).
