GOP CONVENTION '96

The Highlights / TODAY AUG. 15

August 15, 1996

Today's Convention Schedule

5-8 p.m.

* Opening Remarks by Govs. George W. Bush of Texas and Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey

* Dole's economic agenda, discussed by Gov. Steve Merrill of New Hampshire and, via video, House Majority Leader Dick Armey

* Remarks by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott

* Acceptance speech by vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp

* Video biography of Bob Dole

* Dole acceptance speech

VIEWER'S GUIDE

* Dole assumes the spotlight tonight for the most important speech of his life. A strong performance should aid his bid to close ground on President Clinton. But last-minute tinkering with speech has increased anxiety in GOP circles.

* Dole aides hope a video of his life can do for him what Clinton's "Man from Hope" film did for the then-Arkansas governor at the 1992 Democratic gathering--create a favorable opinion among voters who may not know that much about his background.
