Why Doesn't Elizabeth Dole Get Treated Like Hillary Clinton?

August 18, 1996

Re "The Elizabeth Quotient" (Aug. 7): $200,000 a year doesn't sound like a "mission field" job to me. And no one has even questioned the propriety of such a decision by Elizabeth ("don't call me Liddy") Dole.

One can just hear the screaming complaints if Hillary Clinton had such a position. And she's "smart, independent and focused" too, for which she has caught nothing but criticism.

Since Elizabeth Dole has decided to be far from mute on the running of a nation, I hope she faces the enmity and microscopic vivisection Mrs. Clinton has had to endure.

The GOP inveighs against the media for treating Bill Clinton with kid gloves while remaining strangely silent about the genuflecting reporters at Elizabeth Dole's altar.
