Talk about search engines! Amtrak's recently revamped World Wide Web site can send Internet explorers on virtual rail trips, complete with scenery. Using a national system map display, virtual travelers can click on a region of the country and a route, then call up images of trip highlights and the interior of the train, including various classes.
More practical-minded travelers can plot how to get from Point A to Point B. Using the Trakrouter feature, travelers can choose any two cities from a pull-down menu of 650 destinations, and find the best route via Amtrak trains and Amtrak Thruway buses, the trip length, layovers and other facts.
