There Oughta Be a Law

August 25, 1996

I found illuminating Christopher Reynolds' article on the Seller of Travel law ("Travel Law May Be a Boon," Aug. 4). While I am pleased with the additional billfold from which abused travelers might be recompensed, I wonder what moral suasion led the state legislature to determine that good travel agents should be the keepers of the bad agents.

Should the Los Angeles Times be providing advertising for so many agencies that do not comply with the law? How long after the law took effect in January should The Times continue accepting ads from firms stating their application for a Travel Seller Registration number is "pending?"

Merely sending a letter to the advertisers, and continuing to run the ads, may not be sufficient.
