DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION '96

Chelsea Hits the Floor Running

August 29, 1996| Associated Press

CHICAGO — Chelsea Clinton surprised many delegates with a fast-paced stroll across the crowded Democratic convention floor during the roll call of the states Wednesday night.

The first daughter, 16, crisscrossed the hall with several giggling friends through a pathway instantly opened before them by security agents and convention aides.

"She's a cutie," said Paul Kraus, a 17-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa. "It's probably hard for her, being the daughter of the president. But it's important for her to get out there and talk to youth."

The White House teenager shook hands with dozens of delegates but ignored reporters' attempts to pry a quote.
