Bouncing Back

After an enrollment decline that stemmed from the Northridge earthquake and a state-imposed $50 fee on students with baccalaureate degrees, local community colleges are bouncing back, above. . . . And school officials are relieved. The enrollment increases, particularly at Pierce, "are not as substantial as we would like," said spokeswoman Ina Yates. "But we're going in the right direction."

Out of the Rough

Studio City golfer Emilee Klein was a champ as an amateur, but went more than a year without a victory after turning pro. Suddenly this summer, though, she won a pro event in Massachusetts and the next week triumphed in the British Open. "Getting one win was a dream come true," she said. "But two in a row will really get me some respect out here." A profile in Valley Sports (C12).

Cooling Off

When you're in an air-conditioned space, it's easy to forget those who have to toil in the extreme heat. But at Starbucks in Valencia, Mike Zierenberg had an idea: Why not take some cold drinks to firefighters? On Friday, about 150 free Frappuccinos were served up to tired fire crews at Castaic Lake. "They were most appreciative," said Zierenberg.

Most Wanted

Since 1988, the Fox crime show "America's Most Wanted" has helped cops track down some of the nation's most dangerous criminals. But after eight years, the network is pulling the plug on the show (F1). "The citizens of this entire country are going to suffer when that show goes off the air," said Det. Stephen Fisk, who works homicide in the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division. . . . He says the show helped nab accused serial killer Glen Rogers.
