1996 PREP PREVIEW / GIRLS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Newport Harbor

September 06, 1996

Coach: Eric Tweit (17th year).

1995: Ninth in State Division III; Southern Section Division III-AA runners-up; fourth at Sea View League finals; 3-2 league dual-meet record.

Key returners: Meghann Allard, Jr.; Colleen Eadie, Sr.; Alicia McFall, So.; Molly Melum, So.; Autumn Puro, Sr.; Jamie Swarberg, Jr.

Key newcomers: Maxine Babazadeh, Jr.; Amy Murphy, Fr.; Andrea Sparrow, Sr.

Outlook: The Sailors could be one of the surprises of the county this year as Tweit's group has both talent and depth. McFall blossomed as a freshman, finishing fifth in the league cross-country meet and winning the 3,200-meter race in the league track finals. Swarberg has been the team's most consistent runner over the past two years and Sparrow is expected to be among the team's top three. "[Sparrow] is the type of girl that can run [in college]," Tweit said. Allard, Eadie, Puro and Melum all have vital varsity experience and freshman Murphy has a world of talent, so the school with the relatively small enrollment could have a big year.
