This Rule Didn't Hold Water for Butler

September 07, 1996|BOB NIGHTENGALE

Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, sought permission from the National League office for Brett Butler to carry a bottle of water in his back pocket, if needed.

"If you can put a can of tobacco, which we don't allow, in your pocket," Claire argued, "why couldn't you carry a bottle of water?"

The league office agreed, and permission was granted.

The Dodgers recalled outfielder Roger Cedeno and Karim Garcia, and with the activation of Butler, now have 36 players on the active roster. . . . Dodger vice president Ralph Avila, who underwent triple-bypass surgery two weeks ago, attended Butler's news conference and said he was feeling fine. . . . Reminder: The Dodgers' game tonight has been pushed back to 7:30 because of the pregame ceremony honoring Tom Lasorda. . . . Reliever Darren Hall completed his rehabilitative assignment at Class-A Yakima, yielding one unearned run in two innings. He is not expected to be activated, and likely will join the Dodgers' Instructional League in a week.
