1996 PREP PREVIEW / BOYS' CROSS-COUNTRY | SIX TEAMS
TO WATCH

Huntington Beach

September 07, 1996

Coach: Eric Anderson (fourth year).

1995: Orange County champions; winners of divisional races at Las Vegas, Woodbridge, La Mirada and Central Park invitationals; Sunset League champions; 4-1 league dual-meet record.

Key returners: Simon Bhavalai, Sr.; Jacob Childs, Sr.; Dan Gaston, Sr.; Tony Trueba, Sr.

Key newcomers: Ronnie Alvarez, Sr.; Harpreet Mavi, Jr.; Alex Rodriguez, So.; Luke Shelton, Jr.; Marc Schoter, Jr.

Outlook: With the strongest 1-2 punch the county has seen in the last five years, the Oilers could make a strong bid to repeat as county champions. Trueba, the county individual and league champion, and Gaston, the league runner-up, combine to form one of the best duos in Oiler history. Childs, 11th in the league finals a year ago, is a solid backup and Alvarez, a transfer from Westminster, was 12th in the tough Golden West League a year ago. A retiring Anderson said: "My emotional batteries are drained. I told Tony [Trueba] and [Gaston] that I would stick around for their last year." Maybe his team will have a going-away present for him in November.
