The Charts

Up to 'Code'

September 08, 1996

There's no doubt about it--Pearl Jam is still very much "Alive." Whether or not they're well is the main question in the minds of some music industry pundits. The group's latest LP, "No Code," entered both the national sales charts and The Times' Southern California chart at No.1, which was expected. This time around, the group sold 367,000 copies according to SoundScan, which would be impressive if the band hadn't had first-week sales of 950,000 for 1993's record-breaking "Vs." and 877,000 for 1994's "Vitology." Meanhwhile, Atlanta rap duo Outkast makes the week's second highest debut on the national charts with "Atliens," selling 230,000 copies for a No.2 position on both the local and national sales charts.
