1996 PREP PREVIEW / GIRLS' TENNIS

Woodbridge

September 08, 1996

Coach: Joan Willett (12th year).

1995: 20-3, 9-1 in the Sea View League; lost to Palos Verdes Peninsula, 13-5, in the Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Key returners: Natalie Exon, No. 1 singles, first-team Times' all-county, Sr.; Rachel Gunther, singles, Jr.; Danielle Hustedt, singles or doubles, So.; Michelle Stiefel, doubles, So.; Courtney Tenerelli, doubles, So.

Key newcomers: Adriana Hockicko, highly-ranked in 14s, but didn't play Southern California Sectionals because of injury, Fr.

Outlook: Woodbridge surprised many by winning a section boys' title last spring. Could its girls' team do the same? Maybe. Willett has only one proven singles player--Exon--to go along with a lot of young talent. Doubles play was a strength last season when Woodbridge tied Corona del Mar for the Sea View League title, but five of six players have graduated from that group. If the Warriors are going to contend with Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar for the league title this season, Hockicko will have to be solid at No. 2 singles and the young doubles teams will have to jell.
